MLK Day Projects

Ionia County YAC Plans to Give Back on Martin Luther King Day
Ionia County Youth Advisory Council is (YAC) partnering with Toad & Bean and Consumer Merchandise who will provide bags sewn in their sewing classes to YAC. YAC will use the bags in three different ways as part of their Martin Luther King Day service project. They will prepare bags with dental supplies for children in the IM Kids 3rd Meal program, hygiene items for RAVE (Relief After Violent Encounter) and school supplies for students in need at local elementary schools.

Children and adults living in poverty often go without basic essential items to manage proper hygiene and access to school supplies. In addition to the daily struggle to find food and a safe place to sleep, acquiring basic hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste can be challenging. YAC plans to create a variety of projects that provides basic hygiene, dental care, and school supplies that students can put together for others in need. Not only will YAC students fill the bags but will also volunteer. Students plan to deliver the hygiene bags to RAVE and spend three hours on-site volunteering for the organization. If you would like to support the work of YAC students, they will be collecting hygiene items and school supplies. Any donations to help with the cause can be brought to the General Education Department at the ISD.

We hope to see you all out and about in our community, getting things done for Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Are you looking for an organization that could use your help?

It might be too late for you to volunteer for MLK Day Activities in your community, but many local organizations are stilling looking for volunteers on a regular basis.  Here are just a few ideas:

IM KIDS 3rd Meal is a  feeding program servicing food insecure children in Ionia and Montcalm counties. We formed in 2012 with the mission to end childhood hunger in our communities. With Ionia County and Montcalm counties having 3,530 and 4,090 food insecure children, respectively, we know we have a lot of work to do.
We are reaching out to our community to see if groups and organizations are interested in forming volunteers groups to help assemble sack dinners at the H.O. Steel Education Center in Fenwick, Michigan.
Ideally, IM KIDS 3rd Meal is seeking groups of 5-10 people who would commit to volunteering one day a month. Volunteers can sign up as a group or individual to volunteer on a repeating schedule or as a one-time event.

Relay For Life of Ionia County needs volunteers to help spread the Relay Mission throughout Ionia County.  These Community Champions sign up to visit local businesses with Relay Posters, Sponsorship Forms, and New Team Info.  Visit the Relay Page at the top of this Blog for more information about the 2016 Relay For Life of Ionia County.

Blue Star Mothers - 188 are always looking for donations and volunteers to help with sending packages to our deployed military families.  On top of the annual Treasures for Troops Campaign, Blue Star Mothers are busy all year with service projects and fundraisers.

  • Donations can be mailed to: Blue Star Mothers MI-188, PO Box 366, Lakeview, MI 48850.
  • Blue Star Mothers of America is a national organization whose mission is to support our troops currently serving our country, to support our veterans that have returned to civilian life, to support the mothers of those children who are serving, or have served, our nation, and to promote patriotism and democracy.

In addition to fundraising to support our mission, our local chapter also collects items for care packages and sends them to our troops serving overseas, with their moral and well-being being of utmost importance. We also support and work with local veterans agencies to further the care and support our veterans receive upon returning to civilian life. We also are here to help encourage and support all military mothers, those whose children are still serving or have served in the past. Especially those who have become Gold Star Mothers as their children have given the ultimate sacrifice by dying for their country.

If you are a military mother in the Montcalm, Kent or Ionia County area, or know someone who is, we would love to welcome you into our Blue Star Mother family and have you join us on our mission!

We get together on the 3rd Monday of each month at the American Legion in Greenville.

The Montcalm-Ionia MRC is always looking for volunteers to help at community events where volunteers hand out Family Disaster Planning Packets, First Aid Supplies, and Community Info.  We are also asked to proved First Aid and Traffic Control and many local events.  The MRC partners with local Health Depts, Hospitals, and Emergency Management to make our community safer for our families.  For more information visit their website at or contact Amanda at  For Family Disaster Preparedness Resources visit for videos and checklists!
