Who are The Blue Star Mothers?

The Blue Star Mothers Began in Flint Michigan during WWII in support of mothers who had sons and daughters in active duty.

Now, the Blue Star Mothers are organizing care packages to send a little bit of home to our brothers, sisters, and others serving overseas.

Local Radio Station WION I-1430 and Berger Motor Sales of Ionia are combining efforts with Blue Star Mothers this holiday season to collect, package and ship care packages to our troops.
The packages help soldiers gains some basic necessities, some of which are not provided by the government.

Our servicepersons have already donated all their time to US. Now is our chance to give back and to share tokens our gratitude.

Visit www.I1430.com and click on the Treasures for Troops Truck to find locations where it will be to collect your donations.

Collecting items and assembling care packages to send to deployed Military for the Holidays!

Update from a Belding WION Fan

Yesterday afternoon I was visiting with a lady (a neighbor of mine for 32 years) in her 80's, was telling her about your project and the kind of items needed and when you will be in Belding, she said she wondered if money was acceptable, I told her money was needed to ship the collected items. She made a check out to the Blue Star Mothers for $100.00.

By the way, my Mother was a Blue Star Mother when both my brother and I were in the service. My Grandma Braman and my Grandma Hallock were Blue Star Mothers during WWII.

History of the Blue Star Mothers -- On January 22, 1942 the Flint News Advertiser printed a coupon asking Mothers of serviceman to return the coupon after filling it out. The following February 1st 300 mothers met in the Durant Hotel, in FlintMichigan. Captain George H. Maines, who had conceived the idea for this group, acted as the chair of this first meeting. It was decided that after receiving 1000 responses from the ad to form a permanent organization.

On February 6th the organization was reported on Congressional record. Chapters then formed in Michigan,Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon, California, Iowa and Washington. In June of 1960 the organization was chartered by congress.

View the Charter

Mothers volunteered throughout the tough times of World War II. They worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages for soldiers and were an working part of homeland security during times our time of war. The organization waned in size over the years but has held together by mothers showing pride in both their children and country. In recent times we have began to grow in strength. Being attacked on our own soil has once again started mothers hanging flags in their windows at home proclaiming pride in the fact that we have children protecting our freedom during at time of war

Our organization not only provides support for active duty service personnel, promotes patriotism, assists Veterans organizations, and are available to assist in homeland volunteer efforts to help our country remain strong.

Would you like to make a card to send inside one of our Boxes of Love?

Treasures for Troops Donations from the Suggested List of Items

Thanks to Jeff Wakelin, VP of sales for Oberto Brands, we will be receiving 200 PACKAGES OF BEEF JERKY for our troops! So thankful for their generosity!

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who were involved in making these arrangements!

Thank YOU Muir Village Market!

This will be our first Treasures for Troops Collection Site where the 2015 Chevy Colorado will be filled with WION Staff and Equipment to broadcast while collecting donations on Monday, Dec 1st from 2-6pm!  They also donated enough plastic bowl storage containers to make sure each Box of Love received one!

It is my understanding that many deployed units have access to a microwave where they can heat up items such as soup if they are forced to miss a meal.  However, they don't have dishes handy so often struggle to find something to cook in.  These disposable bowls are perfect to heat up canned items and also allow the Blue Star Mom's to package items likes cookies, crackers, etc that might otherwise get broken as tightly as they pack up boxes.

Thank you Muir Village Market for thinking outside (or literally INSIDE) the box with this donation!

WION THANKS Duane Cross and Snap-On Tools along with WION's own Phil Cloud for the donation of a CASE of Snap-On Socks. That's 48 pairs! A big thank you!

Blue Star Mothers are accepting monetary donations to help cover the cost of shipping boxes!

Each box costs $15.45 to ship each box of love.  For a donation of $154 you can cover 10 boxes, for $500 you could cover 33 boxes!  Whether you can cover 1 box or 50 boxes...every donation is appreciated!

Thank You N8MRC for donating the cost to ship 2 Boxes of Love!
Thank You Joan Garland for donating $100 to ship Boxes of Love!
Thank You Mike & Roxanne for donating $20 to ship Boxes of Love!

WION Radio also wishes to THANK the other community partners donating  extra items to make the Treasures for Troops collection possible.

Thank You Ionia Moose Lodge for donating totes to pack the back of the pick up with Treasures!
